Sh0cking clinical case: 21-year-old woman injected mercury into a vein.

Mercury, a liquid metal at room temperature, is commonly found in thermometers and other equipment. Although external contact with this metal can be dangerous, direct injection into the bloodstream is an extremely unusual occurrence with potentially fatal results. This uncommon case warns of an individual who injected liquid mercury into a vein, the consequences for his health, and the treatment he received.

The case: Injection of mercury into the bl00dstream
A 21-year-old female dental assistant attempted suicide by injecting 10 milliliters (135 grams) of liquid mercury directly into a vein. Shortly afterward, she suffered from symptoms such as rapid breathing, a dry cough, and bloody sputum. A chest X-ray showed that the mercury had distributed throughout her lungs in a vascular pattern, particularly in the lower lungs.

Fortunately, after a week of hospitalization, her pulmonary symptoms enhanced, and she was discharged. She was given oral treatment with dimercaprol, a drug that helps remove heavy metals from the body, for nine months. However, her urine mercury levels displayed no significant changes during this period.

Ten months after the incident, the patient had no adverse effects on her kidneys, digestive system, or nervous system, although the abnormalities on her chest X-ray persisted.

Effects of mercury on the body
Mercury is dangerous to the human body. When injected directly into the bl00dstream, it can spread to various organs and lead to damage. In this case, the mercury lodged primarily in the lungs, leading to difficulty breathing and coughing up blood. Fortunately, the patient did not grow damage to other organs such as the kidneys or brain, which can happen in cases of mercury poisoning.

Treatment and recovery

Initial treatment contains hospitalization to monitor and manage respiratory symptoms. Later, she was given dimercaprol, a chelating agent that binds to heavy metals like mercury, facilitating their elimination from the body.

Despite this treatment, the patient’s urinary mercury levels did not reduce significantly, inplaying that the mercury remained in her body. However, clinically, the patient displays no long-term adverse effects on major organs.

Important considerations
1. Dangers of injecting foreign substances
Injecting non-medical substances into the body can have serious and unexpectable consequences.

2. Importance of immediate medical attention

In the event of any attempt at self-harm or poisoning, it is essential to look for immediate medical attention to reduce damage and receive appropriate treatment.

3. Mental health
Suicide attempts imply an urgent need for psychological and emotional support. It is crucial for people in crisis to look for professional help and have a support network.

Conclusion
This case noted the risks of injecting mercury into the bloodstream and the body’s ability to control toxic exposures under certain circumstances. Although the patient dealt with no permanent damage, similar situations can be fatal. Prevention, education, and access to mental health services are crucial to avoiding such incidents.
