A powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska Peninsula struck late Wednesday near the Alaska Peninsula, about 91 km east-southeast of Perryville at a depth of 35 km. The quake triggered immediate tsunami warnings and emergency monitoring across the Pacific region.
Tsunami sirens were activated in areas including Kodiak, while the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for southern Alaska and nearby coastal zones. Initial warnings were also briefly issued for Hawaii and Guam before being lifted after assessments.
Officials, including Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, confirmed activation of emergency operations as agencies such as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and international partners in Japan and New Zealand evaluated potential risks. The US Geological Survey also reported multiple aftershocks, including several above magnitude 6.0, while no major damage or casualties have been confirmed so far.
