Doctors say girl had sprained arm – She now has months to live

When 5-year-old Bonnie Spence was taken to the hospital for an odd lump on her left arm, doctors assured the family she had sprained it.

However, the pain persisted in the days that followed and the family returned to the hospital where doctors performed an MRI scan.

Unfortunately, the results showed little Bonnie Spence had a very rare form of cancer that affects around eight children a year in the UK – Rhabdoid Sarcoma Cancer.
The devastating diagnosis shocked Bonnie’s father, Iain Spence, and her stepmother, Caroline.

Unfortunately, Bonnie’s arm had to be amputated, with doctors giving her only months to live.

“When I woke up after the operation, I was really upset,” the GoFundMe started in Bonnie’s name read.

“I didn’t like not having my arm and was really worried about how I would play on the swings and if people would laugh at me. Daddy and Caroline made me feel much better and I’m coping with my one arm really well now.

“After 10 days in hospital I started chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has made me lose all my gorgeous long blonde hair, which is making me sad. They have given me so many medicines to try and shrink the ones in my lungs to give me more time with my family but it won’t cure me.”

After spending 21 days in the hospital, Bonnie returned home to her family, including her stepsister Jennifer and her half-brother Alister.
Her mom, along with her 2 full sisters and 2 half-sisters, live separately in Lancashire.

Bonnie Spence is receiving chemo treatments and plenty of other medications for her cancer.

“A lot has happened in a small space of time, it’s hard to process.

“It’s really upsetting having to watch her with her little one arm, trying to do everyday tasks that we take for granted.

“We’re just trying to navigate giving her the best time we have left with her. We want the entire time to be really special for her.

Doctors told the family that if the chemo treatments work, Bonnie will have 12 months to live the most. In case they don’t, they will stop them and she’ll have two months.

We hope Bonnie will get a second chance in life.
