Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin, demanding an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine within 50 days. During a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed frustration over stalled peace talks.

“If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, there will be very severe tariffs,” Trump declared. He emphasized his disappointment with Putin, claiming a resolution was expected months ago.

The proposed measures target countries purchasing Russian oil, not Russia directly. Secondary sanctions could drastically increase import costs for nations like China, India, and Germany.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified these would be economic penalties, not traditional tariffs. “If I catch you buying Russian petroleum, you’ll pay,” he explained, noting Trump has both sanctions and tariffs at his disposal.

Currently, U.S.-Russia trade is nearly nonexistent due to Biden-era sanctions. Trump’s plan would further isolate Moscow by pressuring its remaining economic partners.

Trump expressed hope for avoiding escalation but criticized empty diplomacy. “It’s all talk—then missiles hit Kyiv and kill 60 people,” he said, referencing recent attacks.

The ultimatum signals a harder stance from Trump, who has previously positioned himself as a potential mediator. The move could strain relations with key U.S. allies while intensifying pressure on the Kremlin.
