In a landmark summit in Geneva organized by the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), leaders from over 100 countries gathered to address the intensifying climate crisis. The world faces rising climate disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, sea level rise, and droughts, with the IPCC warning temperatures have already increased by about 1.2°C since pre-industrial times and could exceed 1.5°C within a decade without urgent action.
Nations committed to accelerate climate plans, aiming to keep global warming below 1.5°C. Notable pledges included the EU’s goal to be climate-neutral by 2050 and reduce emissions by 55% by 2030, the US’s target to cut greenhouse gases by 50% below 2005 levels by 2030, China’s pledge to reach carbon neutrality by 2060, and India’s plan to expand renewable energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030. Several other countries also announced ambitious targets.
The summit highlighted technological innovations like advanced solar panels, wind turbines, green hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Nature-based solutions such as reforestation and sustainable agriculture were also emphasized as effective ways to absorb emissions.
Economic and social challenges remain, with developing nations requesting financial aid and technology transfer from wealthier countries. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was reaffirmed as a key mechanism, with a goal of raising $150 billion over four years. The role of private companies and civil society was also highlighted; corporations committed to achieving carbon neutrality and developing sustainable products, while youth activists pressed for more urgent action.
Despite optimistic commitments, experts warn that current pledges may be insufficient and lack binding enforcement. Issues like economic disparity, geopolitical conflicts, and resource constraints could hinder progress. The summit called for global solidarity, transparency, and accountability to turn promises into tangible results.
Looking ahead, follow-up sessions and monitoring efforts are planned to track progress. The summit underscored that urgent, inclusive action is vital to mitigate climate impacts and ensure a sustainable future for all…
