The photograph, taken by André Just, captures a real exfoliation treatment from an era when freckles were considered flaws, not features. Cosmetic science was advancing, but comfort wasn’t part of the deal. These chemical peels were harsh, lengthy, and often painful — yet women lined up for them, driven by the beauty standards of their time.
Decades later, freckles are celebrated, photographed, even imitated with makeup.
The irony is striking.
